Chairman of the Advisory Board of the International Peace Foundation, HSH Prince Alfred of Liechtenstein, said the organisation will assist Laos to improve the health sector. HSH Prince Alfred confirmed the support and cooperation development during an official visit to Minister of Health Associate Prof. Dr Bounkong Syhavong on Monday and the University of Health Sciences (UHS-Laos) yesterday where he was met by university President Associate Prof. Dr Phouthone Vangkonvilay.

The objective of the prince's visit is to strengthen relations and further cooperation in the health sector between Laos and Liechtenstein.

The support consists of improving the quality of human resources in the health sector, especially education, with support for curriculum development at UHS-Laos as part of the government's five-year health sector development plan.

Under the programme, Nobel Laureates via the International Peace Foundation will give lectures on physics, chemistry, economics and medicine to students at the National University of Laos and University of Health Sciences in Vientiane, and at Souphanouvong University in Luang Prabang province. The lectures are scheduled to take place in four phases, with the first session to run from November 20-24 this year, the second from January 15-19, 2019, the third from March 8-15, 2019, and the final one scheduled for March 13-17, 2019.

HSH Prince Alfred said he decided to support Laos on behalf of the organisation in the hope that it would help Laos develop the capacity and knowledge of medical staff and thereby improve health services. Associate Prof. Dr Bounkong thanked HSH Prince Alfred for the support which he said would greatly assist staff across various fields of medicine. Due to a lack of funding, many doctors and nurses lack sufficient skills and expertise so the foundation's support will play an important role in health sector development.

The foundation partners with organisations in Laos, including the Ministry of Education and Sports, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Health and several universities.
