Hollywood war film director and Oscar winner Oliver Stone talks about world peace to a class of students at a school in Bangkok, Thailand.
Hollywood legend and Oscar-winning film director, Oliver Stone was in Bangkok, Thailand on Monday (January 25) to promote peace in South East Asia.
He went to one international school in Thailand's capital to address his speech on "film-making and peace-building".
About 300 students from various countries welcomed Stone as he walked into the school auditorium.
"To me peace is the, is not a very good dramatic subject. A peaceful family, a peaceful existence does not have an inherit drama that people would go to see. Make a peaceful movie, most of the people would get bored," Stone told the audience.
"Peace is a result of true peace, true true peace is a result of struggle and struggle is dynamic, dynamic and tension filled. So you must get to peace if you can," he added.
Students tuned into his speech and asked questions about his Oscar-winning films and career as a director.
The New York-born director, screenwriter and producer has won three Oscars with is films, which are mainly focused on political, historical and cultural issues.
Stone's speech is part of an ASEAN event series: "Bridges - Dialogues Towards a Culture of Peace," facilitated by the International Peace Foundation based in Vienna, Austria.
The event gathers well-known actors, actresses, directors and Noble Peace Prize laureates to participate in a dialogue with youth as well as humanitarian support for various causes.
"Why am I here, because I was invited and because I believe in the values of what Bridges for Peace stand for which is peace, communication, education," Stone told reporters after finishing his speech.
Stone says the experience has helped him grow as a director.
"The thing you know that a film director has to renew himself, find his roots, go back to high school and you, you talk to these young people and you hear what they're thinking. It's good for me," he added.
Stone won his first Oscar with his 1978 film "Midnight Express".
He won two more Academy Awards for directing "Platoon" and "Born on the Fourth of July", both centered on the Vietnam War.
Some of his most recent films include "JFK", "Natural Born Killers", "Nixon", "World Trade Center" and "W."
In 2008, the film director accompanied Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez and self-appointed negotiator to hold talks with the Colombian guerilla group known as Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) on a mission to secure the release of three hostages held for over six years.
The meeting was part of Stone's research for his new documentary called "South of the Border," which follows Chavez and 8 other heads of state in South America.
