East Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta has expressed willingness to help mediate a peace process between the Philippine government and rebels from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Dr Ramos-Horta is in the Philippines for a series of lectures on peace initiatives in southeast Asia.

The East Timor leader was highly recommended by the regional peace advocacy group, the Initiatives for International Dialogue.

The group says Dr Ramos-Horta's experience and impartiality would complement Malaysia's work in mediating the peace process between the Philippines and the MILF.

For its part the MILF has welcomed Dr Ramos-Horta's willingness to help with the peace talks, saying his experience in his country's struggle for freedom would be valuable.
